Diabetes Blood Sugar Levels: Measuring Blood Sugar Levels and Understanding Them
Oct/090
Diabetes is a very potent disease. You’ll never be sure you don’t have it until you see some test results regarding your blood sugar levels. It’s important to know how these tests are done so you won’t get insecure whenever a member of a hospital’s staff takes your blood sugar level. Knowing the dangerous zone – the zone wherein diabetes blood sugar levels like to dwell – can help save your life.
Blood sugar level can be measured through a glucose meter. You’ll also need alcohol pads, sterile finger lancets (for pricking your skin and extracting blood), and sterile test strips (to put the blood on). Deciding on what type of glucose meter to buy depends on your preferences or capabilities. One type of glucose meter, for example, can be connected directly to a computer. If you consider yourself to be quite computer-literate, then this meter may be the best for you.

In testing your blood sugar level, you must make sure that your hands are clean and dry. Make sure that the area wherein you’re going to extract blood from was cleaned with an alcohol pad. You must then prick the part you would want to get blood from (consult a physician first before choosing the area to prick) using the sterile lancet. Place the drop of blood on a sterile strip. Insert the test strip on the meter and a number will pop up – your blood sugar level. (Very convenient, isn’t it?)
Now, how do you interpret the results? Simply put, a number between 70 and 150 is considered normal. However, if you haven’t eaten for quite some time and a value of 125 or higher pops up, you might want to go to a doctor. Diabetes blood sugar levels have values greater than 200. If a number greater than 200 pops up on your meter, then you have to consult a physician.
Now that you know your diabetes blood sugar levels and how to measure your blood sugar level, you can change your diet accordingly. These pieces of knowledge will lessen the probability of your contracting diabetes and will also help you live a healthier life.
